This nature-inspired playground seamlessly integrates the beauty of the rainforest into its design, creating a unique play experience that fosters exploration and adventure. The Mandai Rainforest Resort Playground is not just a place for entertainment; it’s an immersive environment that combines learning, nature, and fun, making it one of Singapore's most exciting playground installations.
Designed by Henning Larsen, the playground's landscape architecture embraces biophilic principles, blending natural elements with innovative playground equipment. Biophilic design promotes well-being by connecting people with nature, which is evident in the playground's layout and features. The carefully curated play structures from renowned brands such as Berliner are designed to promote outdoor play, adventure, and sensory engagement. Each play element encourages children to climb, balance, and explore, enhancing motor skills and cognitive development. This focus on interactive and nature-inspired play makes the playground a standout feature at the Mandai Rainforest Resort, ensuring hours of enjoyment for families.
Cannon Ball Tree: A Rain Forest Marvel
At the heart of this playground design lies inspiration drawn from the Cannon Ball Tree (Couroupita guianensis), a significant symbol of the rainforest ecosystem. Known for its fragrant inflorescences that bloom for just a day, the Cannon Ball Tree's flowers emerge on thick, tangled branches sprouting from the tree's trunk.
The tree's fruit, resembling a large, round cannonball, drops to the ground with a distinct thud when ripe, releasing seeds embedded in pulp. While the flowers emit a pleasant aroma, the fruit's scent is notably unpleasant, serving as a reminder of nature's contrasting elements. This fascinating plant adds layers of educational storytelling to the playground, enriching children's understanding of rainforest biodiversity. The inclusion of this iconic tree theme enhances the playground's identity, creating a memorable experience for young visitors learning about tropical forests.
Customised Cannon Ball Fruit and Buttress Root Sculpture
A highlight of the playground's design is the bespoke Cannon Ball Fruit sculpture, meticulously crafted by Italian sculptor Massimiliano Rossini. The process of sculpting this impressive structure began with the creation of the structural frame, designed to resemble the large, round shape of the cannonball fruit. Once the skeleton was in place, Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) was applied to form the outer shell. GFRC is known for its durability and strength, making it an ideal material for both structural integrity and aesthetic detail.
The sculpting process was incredibly detailed — each pattern and texture of the cannonball fruit was meticulously hand-carved to replicate its coarse, weathered surface. The surface of the fruit often appears cracked or aged, resembling the outer texture of an old coconut or dried mud. The artist paid close attention to these fine details, ensuring the fruit's unique and ancient look was captured. To complete the sculpture, a fresh coat of paint was applied to further enhance the appearance, giving the cannonball fruit a natural, aged appearance, as though it had been weathered by time.
In addition to the Cannon Ball Fruit sculpture, a Buttress Root-inspired play element was also created. Buttress roots are large, flared roots that grow horizontally from the base of a tree and play a crucial role in the survival of rainforest trees. Crafted using a similar process to the Cannon Ball Fruit, the Buttress Root sculpture features rock climbing grips strategically placed along the root structure, allowing children to climb up and explore the "roots" in an exciting, active way. To enhance the play experience, the sculpture also includes a slide, allowing children to descend from the top of the roots, mimicking the fun and thrill of exploring the dense rainforest. This addition offers children an immersive, physical adventure that connects them with nature engagingly and playfully.
Immersive Play with Nature at Heart
The Mandai Rainforest Resort Playground invites children to embark on an interactive rainforest adventure. Intricate rope structures mimic tree branches, encouraging kids to crawl, climb, and explore as they navigate from one 'cannonball fruit' to another. Strategically placed Berliner rope elements promote motor skills, agility, and confidence, ensuring active and engaging play. Each structure was meticulously designed and installed to meet stringent safety standards, balancing creativity with security.

Leaf-Inspired Play Elements
To further connect the playground to its rainforest surroundings, we installed several Leaf Springers — vibrant platforms that allow children to bounce and leap between leaf-shaped platforms, resembling the experience of stepping across large leaves in a forest. These stepper platforms encourage balance, coordination, and spatial awareness while adding a visual element that reinforces the rainforest theme.
Additionally, a giant netted Leaf Structure provides another immersive feature where children can climb, relax, and observe their surroundings. Inspired by the wide, sheltering leaves of rainforest trees, this feature encourages sensory exploration and imaginative roleplay, allowing children to engage in free play while experiencing nature in a controlled yet adventurous setting. These custom-designed features strengthen the playground’s connection to nature, promoting active outdoor play in Singapore’s lush rainforest environment.
