The German European School Singapore (GESS) playground, winner of the LIAS Award of Excellence 2019, embodies the guiding principle: "Celebrate your Roots – Discover your Wings." Reflecting European values of respect, openness, and community, this thoughtfully designed playground spans four distinct areas that cater to all age groups, promoting safe, engaging, and developmental play.

The first play area in the courtyard features Berliner Greenville structures with rope nets. These versatile elements encourage motor skill development and problem-solving as children navigate and explore various climbing routes. This area seamlessly transitions into a second, covered space that houses play structures with varying difficulty levels, making it suitable for children of different ages. The open layout ensures optimal supervision, prioritising safety without compromising fun.

The third play area showcases the unique wave-shaped sculpture, “Shout.” This innovative structure integrates planar nets of varying mesh widths, net tunnels, and climbing rings for dynamic play. Berliner Greenville structures reappear in this section, accompanied by additional elements such as climbing plates, bannisters, and rubber mats, which offer a mix of adventure and relaxation. Palmetto Saucer nest swings and a Merry-go-round further enhance this area, fostering balance, kinaesthetic awareness, and collaborative play.

The fourth play area, designed specifically for toddlers, features accessible playhouses with flat ramps, small staircases, and toddler slides. Young children can enjoy activities like crossing a net bridge or sliding, which promote balance and developmental growth. The natural, organic design throughout the playground draws inspiration from the nearby Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, with bamboo panels and earthy colours blending harmoniously with the lush surroundings.

This outdoor redesign at GESS delivers an exceptional combination of imaginative play and holistic development. It provides an inspiring and safe environment that nurtures social, motor, and cognitive growth for children of all ages.
